Preface
The dictionary defines suicide as a person who intentionally takes their own life.
It’s a cold, heartless, uncompassionate definition to a word that can’t ever be
described. I don’t believe Sam committed suicide, but shooting up that one last
time might as well have been.
My brother Sam is dead. My seventeen year old brother Sam, with thick blonde hair
that he always refused to cut and flopped in his dancing green eyes. He died on January
fifteenth. He overdosed. Suicide they called it. But I know better.

Chapter One
Wailing.
That’s all she does. Cry, cry, cry.
Doesn’t she remember that she had another child?
Someone else in need of her love and affection?
But all she does is eat, sleep, and cry. Kind of like a baby.
My mother’s a grown baby.
I sighed and took my ear away from the door. I didn’t want to hear my mother
blubbering and sobbing anymore. She was strong in front of me, pulling it
together for a few moments before running out of the room with a tissue in
front of her mouth, blocking the cries. Then, once she was out of earshot she
would break down completely.
I flopped on the bed and stared at the ceiling. I hated being home, even before
Sam died. My parents had just gotten divorced and my mom had been a mess then.
Then Sam started acting out and getting involved with drugs, and she became an
angry monster. She would yell and scream at him, and he would fight back. Sometimes
before I went to bed all I would hear was them fighting, before sneaking out my
window to my best friend Kate’s house and sleeping over there.
“You told me it was one time, Sam! You promised it was never going to happen again!”
She would shout, her fist pounding on the table with a bang.
“It was my last time mom! I meant it! Haven’t you ever done something you regret?
It was a mistake. I’m sorry!” He would yell back.
“Sorry isn’t going to help when your on a stretcher on the way to the emergency room!”
Then she would sigh. “If I catch you with drugs again, I’m taking away your phone and
sending you to your father’s. Then he can deal with this, because I can’t” We always
hated going to our father’s house. He lived out in the middle of nowhere in this huge
house. The staff had the nights off and Dad usually worked late, so we had to stay
there alone.
“Mom!” He would plead. “That’s unfair, come on! I said it wouldn’t happen again and it’s
not going to happen again! God damn!” Then he would turn and stomp up the stairs to his
room, my mom following him yelling.
“You do not yell at me Sam! Watch your language!” And then they would slam the door and
I couldn’t hear anything but muffled shouts and bangs. By then I would have already been
packing my overnight bag and creeping out the window. Since I was on the first floor, I
would just slide the window open and slip out, running down the street to Kate’s house.
I would knock on the door and she would answer.
“Sam and your mom are fighting again?” She would asking, a knowing look on her face.
“Yeah.” And she would make a space on the couch for me. I would be gone before the sun
came up and anyone in either of our houses were awake.
