    Something You Can't Replace.
    An X-MEN FanFic

    Something You Can't Replace Xmen310

After the biggest battle in mutant history, the faculty and students of the Xavier Institute
for Gifted Youngsters are trying to move on. The new headmistress, Storm, is making the
most of her newfound leadership, attempting to continue the legacy Professor Xavier has
built, keeping the students in line and helping out the new and powerful mutant students.
It's tough on many of the older students, who are the elite "X-Men". Without Professor X
to help in their training and mind development, they're... lost. While Storm is in denial, the
    Institute is crumbling.
Trouble is arising though, boiling under, waiting to erupt. Pyro, distraught over the loss
of Magneto and Mystique, wants revenge. He's glad the professor is dead, he's glad the
institute is dying. But Magneto has a secret--he hasn't lost his powers. He breaks out of
prison and searches out Pyro. Together, they plan to destroy what little sanctuary mutants
    have left.

AN: Little known fact about SB: I'm obsessed with Marvel comics... Mostly just X-MEN, but you know, I love 'em all. I favor X-MEN though in particular, especially the movies. So... You don't have to read this because none of you are nerds like me.

I'm just gonna write it. I have no expectations, and I'm sorry if this gets really confusing at times. The end. Gonna go write now. x]

    one.

A faint scream was heard somewhere in the mansion, but everyone was too sound asleep to even hear it.

Except Logan. Maybe it was his superior hearing, or maybe it was that the scream came from the small girl now sprawled across his bed, practically on his lap. "Kitty..." He growled warningly. He'd been trying to get a few hours of shut-eye before driving to the coast in the morning, but apparently, Kitty had other plans.

The small, mousy girl looked around wildly, as if completely perplexed how she got there in the first place. "Professor?" She called out softly, her eyes glazed over with sleep. "Professor?"

Logan's frustration vanished in an instant, and he set Kitty on the edge of the bed. "Kitty," He said, bending down to her eye level. "Professor..." He chose his words carefully, "isn't here."

Tears welled in the young girl's eyes, and Logan began to panic. He didn't do crying, and he sure as hell didn't do comforting. "Kitty," He said again, a bit more urgently this time. "It's, uh, okay. Professor's in a better place now."

Kitty let out a sudden wail, and she collapsed into his arms a sobbing mess. "Where is he, Logan?!" She cried. "Where's Professor? And Scott? And Jean?"

    "Kitty," He murmured. "They're dead."

This was the entirely wrong thing to say, and Kitty only sobbed louder.

Logan did his best to quiet her; God knows how many people could hear her. He wasn't having much luck until a knock at his door brought him a savior. "Come in," He said gruffly.

Bobby Drake opened the door hesitantly, and when he saw Kitty, he rushed forward. "Nightmare?" He asked.

Logan nodded and immediately handed her over to the boy. He watched as Bobby whispered soothing words in Kitty's ear, getting her loud sobs to soften. Logan sighed, his frustration returning. He decided it would be best to let Bobby handle the situation, and he ducked out of the room, heading towards the kitchen with a beer in mind.

    "Logan."

Logan slammed down his beer and let loose a rumbling growl. "What?" He snapped, not bothering to look up at his intruder.

Rogue sat down next to him at the counter. "Why's everyone up?" She asked.

Logan rolled his eyes. The kid never did know when to take a hint. He might as well humor her while she was there. "Kitty," Was all he said, as if her name explained everything.

Of course, it did. Rogue nodded. "Who's with her now?"

"Ice man," Logan replied, taking a swig from his beer. "Good boy you got there, kid."

Rogue stared blankly at the counter top. "I know," She said. "I don't deserve him."

"Bull shit," Logan muttered. "He doesn't deserve you."

"Wolverine," Rogue said with an uncontainable smirk. "Was that a compliment?"

Logan grunted and downed the rest of his beer. Good God, he needed to leave. He was growing soft. He just complimented a sixteen-year-old girl, for Christ's sake. Then again, Rogue always was one of his favorite of the runts that lived at the Institute.

He stood up to go, but Rogue stopped him. "Where are you going this time?"

Logan smirked. "What are you, my keeper?"

"Might as well be." Rogue smiled, and it made her face look so young and innocent, Logan wanted to protect her from the world--Holy hell, he needed to go now.

"Keep an eye on everyone, kid," Logan said, reluctantly giving into the hug Rogue attacked him with. When she didn't let go, he gently pried her off. "Go to bed," He said in the most stern and menacing voice he could muster at three in the morning.

A voice that apparently didn't intimidate Rogue at all. She rolled her eyes. "Bye, Logan," She called over her shoulder as she padded out of the kitchen and down the hall.

Logan listened until he heard her reach her bedroom and climb back into bed. Then he grabbed the keys to Scott's Harley and hit the road.

AN: Very short. But fyi, Kitty has the power to walk through walls and basically any surface... If you're wondering how she ended up in Logan's bed. Oh gosh, I'm gonna have a lot of explaining to do in this story. x]

    two.

Storm stood in the control room with Hank McCoy watching the newer X-Men run practice drills in the simulation area below. She hit a few buttons on the keyboard in front of her, and several cannons fired into the air aimed at the X-Men.

"Get in there, Pete!" Storm screamed into the intercom. "Now!"

Pete Rasputin looked up at her with hesitation, but when he saw her withering glare, he suited up and blocked Alison Blaire from a cannon that surely would have killed her.

"Thanks," Alison said breathlessly. She turned up the music blasting from her headphones and sent a few sonic waves of energy in the direction of the guns; they, of course, exploded with the momentum. "Storm, ease up! I haven't practiced in a month!"

"You're quite capable of handling this, Alison," Storm said into said into the intercom. "Now finish the mission."

She turned and looked at Hank. "These kids," She said, "will be the death of me, I swear."

Hank smiled, his blue skin crinkling near the corners of his eyes. He rubbed his blue beard gently. "Now, now, Ororo. It takes a lot more than a group of youngsters to take you down." He turned towards the simulation room and watched the young X-Men. "They're learning fast," He observed.

"No," Storm said, watching Kitty grab Alison out of the way of another cannon. "They think they're learning fast. They're getting confident."

    "Confident is good--"

Storm cut him off sharply. "No, it's not. They don't know what it's like out there, in a real fight. You and I both know they--Cannonball, Dazzler, Psylocke--wouldn't stand a chance. And with Jean and Scott gone--" She choked as her throat tightened up. "And the professor..."

"Ororo," Hank said, laying one of his large, blue hands on her shoulder. "You're doing a far better job than anyone could have hoped. And with Logan's help--"

"Logan," Storm sneered, "is taking up space. He jets off wherever he wants, whenever he wants, as if he doesn't have responsibilities, as if--"

"He lost someone too, you know," Hank interrupted her quietly. "Jean was very dear to him. I'm sure losing her was no small ordeal. Do you really believe he could go through that without being affected? You saw how much he cared for her."

Storm closed her eyes and willed the tears to go away. She knew how much Logan cared about Jean; how much he loved her. She knew about their awkward love triangle with Scott. She knew everything, really, despite Logan's attempt to keep everything secret.

But Jean and Scott were very dear to her, too. She wasn't allowed to run off on wild goose chases every weekend.

"I know," She said hesitantly. "I just wish he'd stick around every once in a while."

"Logan isn't one to stick around," Hank said, a small smile returning to his face. "Everyone knows that."

Logan stared at the remains of Worthington Labs, the facility once housing the so-called cure to mutations. It was nothing but an empty, burnt shell. The area surrounding was a graveyard, and there was destruction everywhere. He spotted the mountain of wreckage where it happened.

He closed his eyes and remembered.

His flesh melted away from the searing intensity of Jean's telekinetic waves hitting him over and over again, but it quickly repaired itself as Logan moved closer. He didn't stray his eyes from Jean's. No, wait, those weren't Jean's eyes.

Jean's eyes were warm and mischievous and sparkling. These were Phoenix's eyes, and they were colder than ice. There was no emotion, aside from pure aggression and anger.

He finally reached her, and she sneered. "You would die for them?"

"No," Logan said honestly. "Not for them. For you."

Every bone in his body shattered and repaired itself faster than he thought possible, and the pain was almost unbearable, but he managed. For her. Always for her. He continued to stare into her eyes, searching for something, anything. "
    For you," He repeated.

Something flickered in Phoenix's eyes, and for a second, she looked like Jean again. "Save me," She whispered.

"I love you," He responded, and his voice broke pathetically. Then, he did the impossible. He released his claws into her stomach and watched as the chaos around them died, and everything became eerily silent as her limp body fell into his arms.

Logan let loose an agonized scream and raked his hands through his hair. He couldn't take it. God, he missed her every day, every hour, every waking minute. She was everywhere--in the mansion, in the garage, on the grounds; he couldn't escape her.

Sometimes he heard her voice in his head, late at night when no one was around. She was calling to him, and he wanted to answer. He just didn't know how.

    God, he was going crazy.

His phone let out several short rings before he had it to his ear. "Hello?" He said in a low voice.

"Where in hell are you?" Storm's powerful voice boomed.

Logan rolled his eyes and turned away from the wreckage of the abandoned island. "I'm... I'm just driving around."

"You're at Worthington again, aren't you?"

He scowled, angry that he was so predictable. "I'll be home in an hour."

"Good," Storm said with finality. She hung up before Logan could say something back.

Logan lowered the phone from his ear and stared at it in disbelief for a good thirty seconds. He was always the one to hang up on people, and never in his years of experience with the X-Men has he been hung up on by Storm.

He growled and hopped on his bike, and then he sped across the Golden Gate bridge, which still hadn't been moved from its temporary location across the bay.

AN: So basically, Logan killed Jean, but only because her powers were totally out of control and she was killing everyone. Logan also has the ability to heal any injuries given to him, so he was somewhat immune to Jean's craziness.

Oh, and before the big battle at the end, Magneto (bad guy #1) used his power over all things metal to uproot the Golden Gate bridge and move it to reach the island where Worthington Labs was located.

Make sense? No? That's what I thought. Smile

    three.

Bobby felt hands on the back of his neck, and their feather-light touch gave him goosebumps. He hesitantly scooted out of reach of Rogue's fingers before Pete, Kitty, Sam, or, God forbid, Alison saw the intimate gesture. He didn't want any of them to make a rude comment or a dirty joke, and he knew Alison loved dirty jokes.

He looked over the back of the couch and smiled up at Rogue. "Come sit?"

She did so without saying a word.

The six teenagers stared blankly at the TV, and then Alison stood up. "We should go out," She announced, already bouncing on her toes.

Bobby frowned. He didn't want to be the kill-joy, but Storm probably wasn't too keen on their leaving the mansion. And he didn't want to be yelled at by Storm. "Um," He said, "I don't think that's a good idea."

"Aw, c'mon, Bobby," Kitty said, standing up with a scowl. "You always ruin the fun."

"Leave him alone," Rogue said with a little too much malice.

Everyone grew quiet, and Alison clapped her hands, as if that would break the tension in the room. "Right," She said. "Well, I should probably be getting to bed. You too, Samuel."

Samuel looked up from under his curtain of dark hair and nodded. He followed Alison and Pete out of the room, so that Kitty, Rogue, and Bobby were left in uncomfortable silence.

"Wanna go to my room?" Rogue asked quietly.

It took all of Bobby's willpower not to glance at Kitty in that moment, and he nodded slowly. "Yeah, okay." He wasn't sure if the words actually came out, or his mouth just opened and closed while he floundered like a fish. He forced himself to speak louder. "G'night, Kitty."

Kitty grunted a reply and sauntered out of the room.

Ten minutes later, Rogue's clothes were off, and so was Bobby's shirt. They lay on her bed, and Bobby was still hesitant. "Are you sure?" He asked as he kissed along her neck and collarbone.

In response, Rogue tugged on the waistline of his pants, trying to get them off.

That was enough of an answer for him.

The next morning, Rogue woke up to a snoring Bobby lying next to her in bed. She watched him sleep soundly, his arm draped over her stomach, the other cradling his head. She reached out and brushed her fingers across his cheek, reveling in the fact that she could touch him, kiss him, and be with him in intimate ways that her powers wouldn't allow.

Bobby stirred and scooted closer to her, pulling her nearer so he could rest his head on her shoulder. His snores started up again as he settled back to sleep.

Rogue stared at her hand, and she realized how useless she felt. She didn't belong at the institute anymore, not without her powers. Why, she wondered, was she even still here? Then, she glanced at Bobby and immediately knew. She stayed for him. She got the cure for him.

    Everything was for him.

She suddenly wondered if Storm wouldn't mind her stepping out for a little drive.

Ten minutes later, Bobby was still snoring in Rogue's bed, the rest of the mansion was undisturbed, and Rogue was speeding down the highway in one of the institute's less conspicuous cars, a Jeep Wrangler. She drove to the only place she knew she would feel comfortable--Logan's diner.

It wasn't actually called Logan's diner; it was called Karen's Cafe, but Logan had showed it to her when they first started living at the institute. It had become his infamous hiding place, and, in time, Rogue's as well.

The bell above the door let out its little jingle as she walked inside, and the waitress, Linda, smiled at Rogue's familiar face. She gestured towards the far back corner of the restaurant, where Logan was hunched in their booth.

Rogue smiled a thanks and made her way to the table. "Mind if I sit?"

Logan looked up at her with bloodshot, wild eyes, but she pretended not to be phased and sat down anyway.

Neither of them said anything for what seemed like a long time, both wrapped up in their own thoughts, until Linda came over to take their order. Logan didn't speak, so Rogue did for him. "Two coffees please. One black and the other a hazelnut decaf."

Linda nodded and left without a word.

"Logan," Rogue said hesitantly. "You're scaring me."

"Foot-long, razor-sharp metal claws that extend from my hands don't phase you, but when I'm silent and exhausted, I'm terrifying?" Logan raised an eyebrow skeptically. "You're strange, kid."

    "I am not!"

Logan shushed her. "Calm down," He growled. "What are you doing out so early, anyhow?"

Rogue felt her cheeks flame, and she looked down so her hair covered her face. She was not about to talk to Logan about sex, especially about having sex with Bobby. So she lied, sort of. "I don't have mutant powers anymore."

    "I know."

Rogue looked up at Logan in surprise. "You do?"

"Don't be stupid," He said. "You haven't worn your gloves in almost a week."

Rogue immediately wanted to smack herself in the forehead. Of course, Logan would notice such a trivial thing. "I don't miss them," She said.

"But you're so plain now," He said in a teasing tone.

She ignored it. "I don't know if I should stay at the institute or not."

Logan's eyebrow shot up again. "Where would you go?"

"I'm sixteen. I could probably get a job, and an apartment--"

    "No."

    "But Logan--"

"I said no," He growled. "I will not have you living by yourself in an apartment God-knows-where, working some shitty job where you're treated like crap."

Rogue scowled. "What are you, my keeper?" She mocked, throwing his words back in his face.

Logan smirked and leaned forward. "Might as well be."

AN: Gahh, I just love Logan and Rogue's relationship. They're so father-daughter/best friends, it kills me.

Oh, and just so everyone knows, Rogue's ability was absorbing another mutant's powers and their energy by touching them. So she had to wear gloves all the time, because if she accidently touched someone, she could kill them.

As I already told you, my bff read this and she loved it (as did I.) She kept going on about how she hated the last two movies and loves Wolverine. I was very lost. Oh, and she said something about Kitty being 18 but maybe the comic books or something are different. I don't know!

    four.

John Allerdyce stared down at Callisto, fire in his eyes and revenge on his mind. He was going to kill every single mutant in that pathetic little school, starting with Bobby Drake.

Jamie Madrox stood silent behind him while he simmered, knowing better than to risk his life by speaking.

Astra, however, didn't have such fears. She moved in front of John. "You're being rash," She said, reading his mind without really doing so.

"They killed everyone," John said sharply. He gestured to Callisto, who was writhing on the ground in pain. "They nearly killed her. Don't you care?"

Astra hissed. "Don't make me the enemy, Pyro. You know damn well that I care."

"Goddamnit!" Callisto cried out suddenly. "Help me!"

Jamie bent down beside her, and she held his hand in a vice-like grip. He bit his lip to hide the pain while Callisto moaned. "She's dying," He said to John.

"Let's go," John said. He didn't want to watch Callisto die. He couldn't watch anyone else die, unless it was one of the X-Men. He stomped off in direction of the bridge, intent on never returning to Worthington Labs for as long as he lived. He didn't care if the others followed, but soon he heard the footsteps of Jamie and Astra behind him. That gave him a surge of confidence.

He was their leader now, and they needed him.

"Where are we going?" Jamie asked. As they marched through the dark streets of San Francisco, he multiplied himself by seven in case of an attack, which Astra thought was ridiculous but didn't say anything nonetheless.

"Sewers," John answered. He glanced at Astra, signaling that she should open the hatch to the sewer.

She rolled her eyes and teleported into the drain so she could lift up the hatch. They all climbed in, and John lit up so they could look around. "We're getting recruits," He said to no one in particular.

    "Recruits, eh?"

The trio, plus Jamie's multiples, turned around, braced for an attack.

The intruder laughed, a high-pitched peel of giggles, and stepped into the light. She was a tall, gangly thing, with white blonde hair and cheek bones that looked as though they wanted to break through the skin. She had small, pouty lips and lightning blue eyes, which flickered under the light of the flame.

"You're Pyro, aren't you?" She asked John, a smile on her wise face.

John nodded, holding his defensive stance.

Astra noticed he subtly slid in front of her, as if he was trying to protect her. She nearly snorted out loud; she could protect herself. She didn't blame him, though, because the woman's aura seemed to radiate danger.

"Who are you?" John asked, his voice menacing.

"Phantazia," The woman said. "But you can call me Eileen."

Astra hissed as she shifted through the woman's abilities. "She can suppress other mutants' abilities, and she can teleport too."

"To some degree," Eileen added. "I have yet to perfect it. What are you, some gift-analyzer?"

"Something like that," Astra said stiffly. When she glanced at John, she found him staring intently at Eileen, and immediately, Astra hated the emotion on his face. Jealousy always did become her.

She moved past Eileen and John and started down the long drain towards the former meeting place of the Brotherhood. "Let's move, John!" She called over her shoulder. "We haven't got all night."

She heard John hasten to catch up. "We've got all the time in the world," He said as he turned her to face him; his touch was hot against her cool skin. "Jamie and I will stay behind to discuss with Eileen. You go on ahead."

Astra's jaw dropped. Was he seriously going to make her walk through a dark sewer at night alone? When John didn't give any indication he was kidding, she hissed and wrenched out of his grip. "Fine," She quipped. She turned around and disappeared into the pitch black, headed for the Brotherhood's meeting place.

AN: God, Astra is such a bitch. I love it.

Something You Can't Replace Empty Re: Something You Can't Replace

    five.

Astra teleported into the dim light of the control room where several mutants were gathered. Her presence immediately demanded their attention, considering she was still fuming with rage and jealousy.

"Astra," A male mutant, Byron Calley, said as he hopped up from his seat on the floor. "Slumming it tonight?"

Astra scowled and marched forward so she was looking down upon the mutant; he wasn't more than five-foot-two, after all. "Burner," She spat his name sarcastically. "I've missed you."

"You're still lovely as ever," Burner said with a charming smile. "How's Callisto today?" He smirked.

Astra reeled back and slapped him across the face. "Dead."

    "Oh, what a pity--"

    "That's enough, Burner."

Astra turned to the owner of the voice and smiled. "Karl," She cooed, walking forward to embrace him. "You're looking exceptionally normal today."

Karl Lykos awkwardly embraced her. "Yeah, well, I haven't phased in a few days. No need to terrorize anyone recently."

Astra smiled. Karl had charming brown eyes and the sweetest disposition, but his mutant powers didn't exactly match up. Transforming into a pterodactyl at his own will made Karl powerful but not too popular, as he was famous for losing his temper.

Astra liked him anyway. "Who else is around?"

"Just Burner, Havok and I at the moment."

Astra nodded. "How long have you been here?"

"Just a few days," Karl admitted. "Burner's been hiding out here since the battle though. I'm sure he's seen others pass through."

Astra reluctantly focused her attention on the white-haired, blue-eyed Burner. "Well?" She asked, fully aware he was listening to her conversation with Karl.

"Oh, yeah," Burner said with a casual shrug. "Pietro came through, and so did Wanda for a time. But they only stayed for a few hours, a day at the most."

"Pietro was here?" Astra asked, ignoring the rest of his statement.

    "Yeah--"

"Has he been in contact with Magneto?"

Burner grinned ruefully. "Said he missed you, and that he'd stop by again soon."

Astra scowled again. "That wasn't the answer I was looking for," She snapped. "I asked if he'd been in contact with Magneto. Now, has he or hasn't he?"

"I don't know," Burner said, sitting down in a folding chair and kicking his legs up onto an electrical unit. His rueful smile hadn't disappeared. "Maybe a kiss could help refresh my memory."

"You're disgusting," Astra muttered. "I'll just let John deal with you when he arrives."

The look of terror on Burner's face brightened Astra's entire day, and she sat down with a pleasant smirk, waiting for John and Jamie to arrive, hopefully without Eileen.

Storm stood in the doorway of Professor Xavier's office. It was almost midnight, and lights out was two hours ago. Storm usually liked to set a good example for the students by going to bed at that time too.

But she couldn't sleep, and she hadn't since the battle at Worthington. Her newfound insomnia had her bored often, so she spent her nights in the professor's office, or out on his balcony where the two liked to chat.

Professor's wheelchair sat behind his stately oak desk, and just looking at it made tears form in Storm's eyes. She wiped them away, though, as she heard someone coming down the hall. She turned around with the intent to tell whatever student was up at this hour that they needed to return to bed immediately.

Logan stopped in his tracks, probably because he saw the tears in her eyes. And for once, he was at a loss for words.

This thought made Storm laugh, and a few tears rolled down her cheeks.

Logan raised an eyebrow. "Something funny?" He asked, looking a bit amused.

"What do we do now?" Storm asked. It was the question she'd been pondering since the professor's death. Where was there to go? What was there to do? More students were coming each day, and Storm had already been forced to turn away two families.

Logan didn't seem surprised by her curious question. He stepped forward into the office. "I guess," He said quietly, staring at the carpet. "We move forward."

She didn't like his answer. "How?"

    "I don't know."

    "I miss them."

Logan looked up from the floor, and Storm saw his eyes shining. Oh God, if Wolverine broke down in front of someone, especially her, there was no hope for the rest of them. "Me too," He said, but it came out as nothing more than a whisper.

"Oh, Logan," She breathed. She stepped forward and pulled him into a hug that he tightly returned. She didn't mind that he was crushing her sternum, or that she couldn't breathe properly. It was in this moment she realized she'd never actually hugged Logan.

"I usually reserve these for Rogue," He grumbled into her hair.

"I'm sure you can spare one," She snapped back.

They broke apart, smirks on both their tear-stained faces. Neither of them had anything to say, and silence ensued as they stared at each other. Logain finally muttered something about her needing sleep, and Storm laughed softly.

"I don't sleep much these days," She said.

Logan gave her a crooked smile. "Well then, you wouldn't mind joining me for a beer."

Before she knew what she was doing, Storm found herself following Logan into the kitchen. She didn't even drink, but when he handed her the beer, she downed it. Three more and she couldn't keep her eyes open. The last thing she remembered was Logan picking her up in his arms, still muttering nonsense.
