Just Like Kindergarten

Prologue

Just Like Kindergarten <3 Summer11

Love…I can’t even describe it. It’s a series of roller-coasters. It’s like flying and then suddenly realizing you’ve never left the ground. It’s like eating chocolate and realizing you were eating brussel sprouts the whole time. This, this very feeling, I felt with Cade Evans.

Chapter 1: Blah, Blah, Blah… Backstory

I met Cade in Kindergarten when I was five. He was the overly confident kid who stole crayons and ate paste just for the fun of it. He was the kid that everybody liked and who was everyone’s friends. You know, the kid that always gets “Most likely to be President” when you graduate. Blah. I was the lovable, withdrawn girl who everyone liked, but never really got to know that well. I was the girl that loved to color pictures that were beautiful enough and laudable enough of the refrigerator.

One day, our teacher made us go out of our comfort zones and try a new center from the norm. I always stayed in art (coloring for mommy!) and Cade in puzzles (He’s a puzzle freak!) so she sent us both to my worst nightmare, the building center. The building center had all kinds of wooden blocks in every size, shape, and color imaginable that most boys found “their dream”. It was foreign territory to me, the blocks…and Cade. The disheveled brown-haired boy had always appealed to me, but still…he had cooties. Our teacher dared us all to build the highest block tower we could. Today, I understand she was trying to get us to “expand our horizons” a bit and meet new people. Back then, I thought she was an evil witch sent to ruin my perfectly calm, peaceful life. I, being the good little girl I was, started building a tower with Cade right away. Surprisingly, he and I got along pretty well and before long we had the highest tower in the class.

We also had a kid named Ronny in our class. He was the rat, the class clown, the cry-baby, and the teacher’s pet all wrapped up into one evil package. Ronny had decided to be funny that day and while the teacher’s back was turned, “slightly nudge” our tower so it would fall. Just as the tower was falling, Riley pushed me out from under the falling blocks, “saving my life”. Since then, we’ve been inseparable.

Chapter 2: Still the Same

All through school Cade and I were the best of friends. We were in the same class every year and our parents gradually became good friends. The summer of 2nd grade, Cade’s family moved across town to a house right across from mine. As they were slowly moving, Cade would come over and we would sit in my front yard, dreaming of what the next years of our lives would bring. When Cade finally did move in, his dad built him and me a treehouse, our own sanctuary.

Every afternoon, Cade and I would go sit in the treehouse and eat cookies and drink grape juice and just be kids. I shared everything with Cade: my doubts and fears, my hopes and dreams, even my first kiss one sunny afternoon when I dared him to kiss me and was pleased when he did. That kiss, a simple peck on the cheek, not even measuring up to a bug bite, was the only kiss we shared. In our teenage years, he was my crying shoulder and a valuable replacement for my non-existent father. He comforted me when my mom couldn’t and was always there, 24/7.

Now we’re sixteen and have swapped the matchbox cars and Barbies for cellphones and iPods and the juice boxes for coke and the occasional beer. Every afternoon is the same everyday routine. We still eat our snack in the treehouse. We still talk about everything and anything. And we’re still the same Cade and Sarah we’ve always been.

Chapter 3: Emerald Green Eyes

It was a sunny summer afternoon and Cade and I were practicing our usual, hanging out in our sanctuary, the treehouse.

“I think we should tear down the treehouse.” I said in mock sincerity, my eyes grazing the worn boards and rusty nails.

“No way! I can’t believe you’d even say that!” he said with mock hurt, a twinkle in his emerald green eye. I always said that and he always knew I was kidding. It was our place. Nobody could tear it down. They finished their snack and scooted over, almost in sync, to the small doorway of the treehouse, another tradition. They sat, thigh to thigh, barely fitting in the doorway, their legs swinging in the breeze, grazing the green leaves of the oak where their treehouse sat. For awhile, Cade and I just sat there our legs swinging and my brown curly hair blowing in the late afternoon breeze, neither of us saying anything or having to really.

Finally, Cade cleared his throat and said, “So Sarah, umm…do you want to, maybe, go grab a burger, maybe, in town tonight?” Cade said, rushing his words together and rambling.

“Sure!” I said brightly. We always went for burgers in town; it was nothing new. “So, have you called Aaron and Jessica yet and told them the plans?” I asked, naming our other two best friends.

“Um, actually I was thinking it could just be me and…you tonight.” He said nervously, rubbing the back of his neck, the telltale sign he was uncomfortable. This was not my Cade, my best friend. He was the confident, easygoing guy that I knew and loved. Not this tense, awkward brute sitting beside me.

“Well Cade, if I didn’t know any better, I would be thinking you were asking me out on a date.” I said teasingly, nudging him in the process. Cade said nothing and simply looked dejectedly in the distance.
“Oh.” I said, realizing exactly what I had just said Cade had meant, literally. Cade wanted to date me. Me! His best friend, his fucking sister for heavens sake! As I tried to wrap my mind around this I realized I was actually kinda happy, giddy in fact. I wanted Cade to ask me out? It didn’t make any sense…but I was still in full bliss mode. I came back to Earth as I heard Cade sigh miserably, his shoulders slumped and he looked out into the oncoming sunset.

“Hey.” I said, grabbing his chin and turning his face to look into mine so I could stare into those wonderful emerald green eyes the color of grass. God, I loved those eyes. I loved him. I slowly leaned forward and kissed the boy I haven’t kissed since the summer of 2nd grade, the boy that I was the closest to in the world, the boy that I considered my only real friend and my brother for life. The kiss turned deeper, his lips pressed on mine harder and harder and his hands caressed my face softly. Cade rolled on top of me slowly kissing me and steadily scooting back into the treehouse so that the door would close in the process.

As we pulled away, I stared into his emerald green eyes, grinned, and realizing I still haven’t answered his request, said, “I’d love to.”

Chapter 4: My Whole Heart

The doorbell rang at exactly 7 o’clock. I quickly rushed down the stairs and checked myself in the hallway mirror. I opened the doorway to find a very cute, very nervous-looking Cade staring back at me.

“You look gorgeous.” He said with a shy smile, handing me the roses he was holding.

“Thanks!” I said, returning the smile and giving him a kiss on the cheek. Cade hurried to the passenger door of his red Dodge, opening the door and helping me in like a perfect gentleman. Cade held my hand the whole ride and it was never once awkward between us. I was surprised when we pulled up to a private beach instead of the burger joint in town.

“What is this?” I said suspiciously, giving him a wink.

“It’s a beach, what does it look like?” he said, returning the wink. He pulled a loaded picnic basket and a couple of blankets out the back of his truck and helped me out. He led me towards the beach and as soon as we hit the sand I slipped off my silver sandals, letting them dangle from my freshly-painted hot pink nails.

We got to a spot just right, not too far from the water, but not too close so we would get wet. I opened the basket of goodies to find homemade sandwiches, fruit, and little chocolate cupcakes…my favorite. As he wrapped his arms around me and I ate my cupcake, we talked about old memories and new ones we hoped to make…together. As we talked, I still felt Cade was my best friend. Just now, a best friend that was also…my boyfriend.

Suddenly, Cade just leaned over and kissed me. It was sweet and honest, a perfect reflection of his own personality. I kissed him back fiercely and as Cade pulled the blanket over our heads, hiding us from the night, I knew that I loved Cade Ryan Evans with my whole heart.

A.N.: Sorry it was so short! These next few chapters are kinda of filler chapters! They are completely meant to lead up to the action that will come in a few. Anyways...wasn't that sweet! Comments?
