Post by sb on Sun Jun 20, 2010 5:42 pm

    MADDENING.

Having a boy start a nasty rumor about you and another boy is obviously upsetting. Being
harassed the other victim of said rumor is irritating and a little scary. Being forced to make
a horrendous deal with the rumor-starter that involves upsetting the victim?

    Well, that's downright maddening.

AN: This will be similar to the RP I've just started, but not really. I'm going to label this as coming soon, so don't hate me. Smile

    CHAPTER ONE:
    RUMOR HAS IT

“Anya, I really think you should calm down.”

I smirk at my ever level-headed friend Jaime Potter. She’s still caught inside the box, but she isn’t trying to get out either. “Oh, Jaime,” I say in the most patronizing tone I can manage under the circumstances. “You’re overreacting.”

She scoffs, and her face turns as red as her hair. “I’m overreacting? You’re the one plotting Carson Drake’s demise!”

“Along with the rest of the female population at Villanova,” I snap back cattily. Villanova College Prep is our over-the-top private high school. It’s a pretty large school, with roughly 1,000 students, and I wasn’t kidding about the female population being out for Carson Drake’s blood.

I might as well start somewhere, so I’ll give you a little background on Carson Drake. He’s your average prep-school hot-shot with all the perks that come with being school’s reining babe magnet. He’s hot, he’s rich, and he’s undeniably charming. Girls can’t resist him. And he can’t resist them. So he easily moved through our entire junior class back in sophomore year, and he’s currently weaseling his way through the senior class as well.

Oh, and he’s busy starting rumors about me. And Jake Hannibal, who, at this moment in time, wants to eat me alive because he thinks I started the rumor about us doing… the nasty. I totally didn’t, obviously, or else I wouldn’t be so peeved.

But I’m still terrified of him. He’s got that scary, hardcore band-thug thing going on, and if someone like that threatens your life, you’d be scared out of your wits too.

See? This is all Carson Drake’s fault.

I mean, I strike up a conversation with Jake Hannibal at a crappy party at Kate River’s house one night because I’m a little tipsy and clearly already out of my mind. I spill my drink on him—courtesy of my graceful demeanor—and help him clean it off by taking him to the bathroom. And Carson Drake thinks that’s good enough reason to start blabbing to everyone.

Hence, I want him dead. And Jake Hannibal wants me dead. And Carson wants Jake dead for reasons I can’t fathom. One of us is going to die, and I can assure you, friends, it won’t be me.

Because Anya Berry doesn’t let people push her around. And she certainly doesn’t let rumors fly about her tainted purity, which, by the way, still remains intact. I’m going to stop referring to myself in third person because I’ve got a person to kill.

    “Anya, seriously. You’re worrying me.”

I’m pulled out of my reverie by Jaime, who’s still staring at me with her doe-like brown eyes that ooze concern. “Don’t worry about me,” I say noncommittally. “I’m going to be just fine.”

“I’m not worried about you,” She says with an eye roll. So much for concern. “I’m worried,” She says, “about Carson Drake.

I throw a pillow from my bed, aiming for her face. Naturally, I miss and swear under my breath. “So much for friendship,” I grumble, snatching the bag of Krunchers from her hands. “So,” I say. “Should I make it painful?”

AN: Haha actually I've had this finished for about three days. I'm working on chapter three/four right now. Umm this isn't even 600 words, so... Sorry. I promise the other chapters will be longer. This is just so you can get a taste of Anya's awesome-ness.

    CHAPTER TWO:
    JAKE HANNIBAL

This party is stupid, and I was dragged here by my friend Haley. Jaime tagged along, of course, but only to watch my suffering. She hates parties.

Okay, first things first. I don’t hate parties. I don’t even mind them at all; if I’m being completely honest, I actually kind of enjoy them. The ones that aren’t in the movies—the real ones—with music and laughing and people who aren’t completely hammered are fun.

Except this one, it’s one of those you would see in a movie, on a much less extravagant scale though. Currently, we—Jaime and I—are sitting on a window seat in Katie River’s luxurious pool house, watching the madness unfold. There’s a keg, a makeshift dance floor where couches have simply been moved aside to make room, and speakers so big they could kill a person if they fell over.

Haley comes over with three red cups overflowing with beer. She hands two of them to Jaime and me, and then she says something about Kyle Grellner wanting to meet her in a bedroom upstairs before disappearing as quickly as she appeared.

Jaime and I share a look, and I meekly take a sip of the beer. It’s not ice cold, but it’s not warm either. I’m not really a drinker, but just looking at the scene around me, I feel as if I might need some alcohol.

Jaime sips hers slowly, and I know she won’t even finish her first cup by the end of the night. I know I will though. I don’t know why I’m here, anyway. Well, I mean I’m here because Haley invited me, but I don’t really know anyone at this party aside from her.

I don’t think I even know what Katie Rivers looks like, and here I am sitting in her pool house drinking beer and enjoying her hospitality. What’s wrong with this picture? Everything.

I take another sip of my beer to find it empty, and I realize I drank it all while I was thinking. I’m in need of some more, so I get up, ignoring Jaime’s frugal attempts to stop me, and head to the keg.

There’s a big meaty guy in a letterman jacket—I didn’t know our school even had letterman jackets still—who seems to be in charge of the tab. I had him my cup and he refills it with a grin. “Here you are, little lady,” He says. Except he slurs his words so there is an extra syllable added to each word.

I smile my thanks and walk away, already downing the contents of my cup. I drain it as I reach Jaime, smacking my lips just to spite her.

She looks on with a bored expression. Her cup is at her feet, still full. Clearly, she’s made her decision for the night.

One hour later I’ve made friends with letterman jacket guy; his name is Devin McReynolds, and he’s on the football team, starting outside linebacker. Oh, and I’ve lost count of how many times he’s refilled my drink.

I want to say six, but I don’t want to over or underestimate. But this time, when I sit down with my freshly topped off beer, the room tilts a little to the left.

Jaime smirks. “Oh, Anya,” She says. “You’re drunk.”

I open my mouth to say something witty, but my tongue feels really heavy. That’s when I spot him.
He’s across the room, leaning against the stairwell that leads to the pool house’s second level. He’s got a nose piercing and wild dark brown hair and a leather jacket that makes him look intimidating. And he’s all by himself.

“I’m gonna go talk to that guy,” I say to Jaime, pointing towards the boy. “He looks lonely.”

“Anya!” Jaime scolds. “That’s Jake Hannibal! If you go over there, he’ll probably eat you alive. Not to mention he has a girlfriend.”

The name Jake Hannibal clicks in my head, and I realize who we’re talking about; pot-smoking, Camaro-driving, leather-wearing Jake Hannibal that scares half the population at Villanova.

Still, he looks lonely, so I get up and make my way over to him. I don’t think Jaime even tried to stop me this time.

AN: So this is actually half of a chapter. The whole one was about 1,500 words (a little lengthy for a short story such as this), so I split them into a cliff-hanger-ish two chapters. Hope you like! Comments would be cool Smile

    CHAPTER THREE:
    CARSON DRAKE

I smile at Jake. “Hi,” I say.

He looks at me strangely, as if he’s not sure what I’m doing. “Can I help you?” He says finally, probably after he realized I’m not going to leave.

“You looked lonely,” I say. “No one should be standing by themselves at a party.”

“I like being alone. What’s so wrong with that?” His expression is still hard to decipher, but he hasn’t made a move to eat me yet. So I think this is a good sign.

“My friend said you were going to eat me. I knew she was wrong,” I blurt before I can stop myself.

This draws a laugh from him. Jake’s laugh is loud and vibrant; it makes my toes curl. “It’s still early yet,” He says when he’s stopped laughing.

I shrug. “Well, I don’t think you will.”

Haley chooses that moment to charge at me, knocking me into Jake’s side and my beer down the front of his shirt. She giggles, apologizes, and then she looks up at Jake. When she registers who he is, she lets out a yelp and runs in the other direction.

I watch her go, my mouth hanging open in shock. I crane my neck to look at Jake, and his expression is one of amusement and surprise. “I’m sorry,” I say. Before I know what I’m doing, I grab his arm. “I can get that out with a little water and a towel. I’m sure there’s a bathroom around here somewhere.”

I lead him to the bathroom despite his assurance that I don’t need to clean his shirt. I shove him inside with a newfound strength and follow behind. The door somehow ends up shut, and I’m in a bathroom with Jake Hannibal.

I wet a towel and jokingly ask him if he’ll take off his shirt. My mouth drops open when he obliges with a smirk. I was kidding, I think. I would never ask a guy to take off his shirt, ever. But now I’m staring at the little happy trail above the waistline of Jake’s jeans, and his wet is shirt in my hands.

I shake my head and lean over the sink, scrubbing the shirt with the towel. I’m making quick work of it, actually, and it doesn’t smell too bad after I wring it out. I hand it to Jake, and leaves with a quick thanks.

I notice he doesn’t even put his shirt on.

This is when Carson Drake appears, a giggling girl at his side. His eyes widen in surprise at the sight of me and Jake’s retreating back and then he laughs. His laugh is melodic, like everything about him, but there’s a sinister edge to the noise.

“Anya,” He says. And I’m surprised he knows my name. “Was that Jake Hannibal?” His tone is incredulous, condescending, accusing, amused; I could go on and on. A stupid smirk plays on his lips, and he gently pushes his girl down the small hallway. But he doesn’t leave.

I’m staring, open-mouthed, while Jake gets to walk away from this mess scot-free. Why does he get to leave? Why am I forced to answer questions that I probably don’t know how to answer at all?

Carson repeats his question, a little more seriously this time, but the smirk’s still there.

I don’t know how to answer. I don’t want rumors to fly, and I certainly don’t trust Carson Drake with my secrets. Not that this is a secret; I was just helping him wash his shirt. I open my mouth and close it, and then I hiccup. The sound echoes off the tile walls loudly.

“He has a girlfriend,” Carson says as if it isn’t a well-known fact that Jake Hannibal and Marcy Freeman have been dating for almost a year.

No shit, Sherlock, I want to say. No shit that if this ever leaves this bathroom, I’ll be torn to shreds by Marcy and the entire field hockey team. No shit.

“I was cleaning his shirt,” I manage to say. “I spilled beer on it. So it’s not a big deal—”

“Not a big deal?” Carson smiles manically. “You two were drunk in a bathroom together, and I’m supposed to assume he wasn’t cheating on his girlfriend?”

“How do you know I’m drunk?” I demand, but before he can respond, another hiccup slips out. I frown.
Carson laughs. “As if it’s not painfully obvious.”

“Well, sorry,” I say. “I was just cleaning his shirt.”

“Right, like I’m going to believe that,” He says, and he rolls his eyes. “I can’t just let this be kept under wraps.”

“What?” I don’t know what he’s up to, but I have this uncomfortable feeling in my throat that makes me think it’s nothing good. Or maybe I just have to vomit. I’m not sure, but I need to sit down. So I sink down onto the side of the bathtub.

“Anya Berry and Jake Hannibal caught in the bathroom having sex,” Carson says with a far-away look on his face. “What a scandal since Jake has a girlfriend.”

    “Carson—”

“Can’t wait to tell everyone,” He says, and then he’s gone.

And that uncomfortable feeling returns. I stand up quickly and vomit into the toilet, but the uncomfortable feeling is still there.

    SIXTY-NINE

Monday at school, everyone’s talking about Jake and me. Okay, when I say everyone, I mean about half of my grade. Still, that’s about 150 seniors discussing what style Jake and I used in the bathroom because clearly it’s impossible to use the missionary position in such a small space.

This, obviously, is news to me. I had no idea there were different styles and positions to use during sex. I like to think it’s not because I’m naïve but because I’m too mature to be thinking about sex all the time.

Jaime still laughed until she choked on her soda when I asked her what ‘sixty-nine’ meant.

Anyway, here I am, pissed as hell with tons of people whispering about me in the hallway. I like to think it kind of died down as the morning rolled on, but in English third peiod, Henry Brangle threw a condom at the back of my head.

So people are still talking, I’m still pissed, and Jake’s still glowering at me across the lunchroom.

I sit at my usual table with Jaime and a few other kids from the swim team. Our table reeks of chlorine at this moment, thanks to an early morning practice, and our eyes our entirely bloodshot. Everyone’s laughing and eating and acting normal, but I can’t seem to get Jake Hannibal to stop staring at me.

You’re probably thinking, “Anya, why don’t you go talk to him and explain yourself?”

Okay, I know I did it Friday night, but that was because I wasn’t completely in control of my actions. I was a little drunk, I guess, and I didn’t stop to think these things through. And now that I’m sober, Jake seems a lot more intimidating.

So I’m going to walk up to a monstrously tall guy with an ear piercing and tell him he needs to back off because the rumor isn’t my fault. Yeah, I’ll get right on that.

    Not.

Because Jake Hannibal wants to eat me alive.

    I’m so screwed.

    * * *

In chemistry later, Carson steals my friend Haley’s seat, and he smiles at me in that way that makes every single girl at Villanova swoon.

I would have swooned too, had it been any day last week or weeks before, but now, I gag a little, making an obnoxious face. “What do you want?” I say through clenched teeth.

“Just to see how you and Hannibal are doing. Are you guys an item now, or was it just a one-time thing?” He wiggles his eyebrows up and down, feigning interest. He’s just toying with me to make me angrier, and he wants me to make a scene or something.

But I’m not the scene-making type of girl, and I hold back the hundreds of curses and bad names I want to hurl at him at the moment. I think about ripping every single brown hair from the top of his head, but that would fall under scene-making, I suppose. So I simmer silently.

“What?” Carson grins, his blue eyes sparkling annoyingly. “Jake got your tongue?”

Silently, so as not to make a scene of course, I move my foot underneath the table and stomp on his custom-made Nikes as hard as I can.

He howls, and the teacher looks up for the briefest of moments before going back to taking attendance. “I can see you’re here, Mr. Dake,” She says in a bored tone.

Carson makes a grunting noise and glares at me.

I can’t help but smile at my small victory. “Sorry, Carson,” I say in a falsely innocent voice. “Lost my footing.”

The glare disappears, and he too looks perfectly calm and innocent. “Quite all right, Anya. It’s understandable with your clumsiness.”

It’s my turn to glare at him, and I have nothing to say because I’m horrible with comebacks, really. Jaime has been working with me, but my mind goes blank under pressure. It goes hand in hand with the scene-making fear.

After a minute of silence, I find the stupidest thing to say. “If you’ll excuse me, Carson, I have to pay attention to my chemistry teacher now. I hope that’s not a problem.”

“Not at all,” He bites back playfully. “We can always talk later.”

I slam my head down with a frustrated groan, and his laughter earns him another stomp on the foot.

AN: Here's chapter four. I already have chapter five written too. I was bored the other day, so I pulled this baby up on Word. TA-DA.

I'm sorry but every time I read this I think of Hannibal the Cannibal and then all these gross images come to mind. But then I don't think Jake is a cannibal and this story turns into a good one again! =]
