Skylar pulled the hairbrush through her brown tassled locks, and squinted into the mirror. Her eyeliner was a bit smudged. Whatever, it gave her a sexy bedhead feel.
Anxiously, she picked up the enV Touch lying next to her sink. No new messages.
Ethan should have texted by now..., she thought impatiently.
As if by fate, two messages arrived. One from Marlee and one from Ethan.
Her jade green manicured nails opened Ethan's first.
Ethan to Skylar: Sky, we need to talk.
Skylar bit her bottom lip nervously. That was never a good sign.
Marlee to Skylar: I'm sorry.
Skylar's perfectly plucked eyebrows deepened. What was going on?
Skylar to Ethan: yes, what?
Skylar to Marlee: what are you talking about?
They both responded almost instantly.
Ethan to Skylar: I'm calling you.
Marlee to Skylar: Talk to E.
"Just The Way You Are" by Bruno Mars, her ringtone, began playing almost immediately.
"Yes?" Skylar answered anxiously.
"Sky?" Ethan's voice trembled.
"It's me," she replied. She could hear Ethan coughing nervously through the phone. And then she heard the disastrous words,
"I think we should break up."
"What?" Skylar was devastated. "Why?"
"Something, uh, happened."
"What are you talking about? We can talk this through. We've been going out for six months, Ethan."
"I don't know if this can be fixed. Besides, you wouldn't forgive me."
Skylar felt as though she were about to burst.
"Ethan, I love you!" she almost shouted.
"WellIuhhHookedUpWithMarlee."
"WHAT?" Skylar was sure she couldn't have heard right.
"I'm sorry, Sky. I can't do this." He hung up.
Skylar stared at her phone, not believing what just had happened.
Emotion overtook her. In a phase of rage, she texted both Marlee and Ethan.
Skylar to Marlee&Ethan: you're not sorry.
Then she turned off her phone and turned on the shower.
