Legendary

Easton Academy had seen it all by the time Noelle Lange and Reed Brennan graduated, but that was before

chapter one

Tegan Prier was not one to be late for anything. She was always--always--exactly on time. Never a minute early, never a minute late, but Evangeline always tested this rule as often as possible. Tegan impatiently tapped her Marc Jacobs heels against the gleaming wood floors of the dorm room they shared.

"'Vange, I will leave you to get to breakfast on your own if you do not open this door right now," Tegan threatened half-heartedly.

The bathroom door swung open and Evangeline Coak--five-foot-ten, size two Evangeline--stepped out onto the hardwood floors in Michael Kors boots and an oversized cashmere sweater complete with tights. She smiled briefly, a row of perfectly white teeth flashing just for a moment.

"Sorry!" She squealed, scuttling across the room to grab her Fendi off the bed. She flipped her long blonde hair once and rolled her shoulders. "Ready," She said finally.

Tegan rolled her blue eyes and walked out the door without a word. The familiar click-clack of heels told her Evangeline was close behind. On the way down the stairs, several girls whose names Tegan never cared to remember greeted the two warmly. She waved elegantly and didn't stop. She continued her brisk pace all the way to the dining hall, so that when they arrived Evangeline was near-whining.

"You'll have your coffee and everything will be lovely," Tegan assured her as they walked through the double doors. She smiled at the knowledge that everyone was watching her. She made her way to the center table where several people were already seated.

Evangeline practically threw herself into her boyfriend's lap and gave him a very overdramatic and drawn out kiss. "Morning," She said, moving into the seat beside him.

Kip draped his arm over the back of her chair with a lazy smirk. "'Ey, babe," He said quietly.

"Kip," Tegan greeted in disinterest as she sat down across the table. She didn't expect a response, and as usual she didn't get one.

Kip Bowline was a taller, male version of Evangeline. He was lean and clean-cut and stunningly handsome. His hair was a shade too dark to be called blonde, and he had the nicest bone structure Tegan had ever seen. He was a man of few words, lest they be spoken to one of his friends or his girlfriend.

"Did you hear, Tey?"

Tegan turned in her seat to look at Gloria Sulton. Gloria was, to put it bluntly, was a gossip. She somehow knew everything about everybody, and she always used it to her advantage. She loved to stir up trouble, and nothing pleased her more than making somebody cry.

Tegan smiled, tucking a loose strand of dark hair behind her ear. “Hear about what, dear?”

Gloria looked around to make sure no one was listening, even though they both knew everyone in the café was eavesdropping. “Vance hooked up with Lindsay King!” She said a little too loudly.

The café started to buzz with the newly discovered information, and more than a few heads turned in the direction of the sophomore tables to search out Lindsay King.

Tegan rolled her eyes and looked across the table at Vance Crosier, the victim of Gloria’s latest spill. He sat chewing on his thumbnail, looking absolutely bored with everything. Tegan looked at him expectantly, waiting for some sort of explanation.

Vance looked back at her, his eyebrows raised. “Can I help you, Prier?”

“Really, Vance? Lindsay King? That’s the best you can do?” Tegan laughed, but it was a bit off pitch—obvious she was faking it. But only Evangeline knew Tegan had a low-key romance with Vance Crosier, and it would stay that way for as long as Tegan liked.

Vance chuckled under his breath, his eyes sparkling. “Jealous, Tegan?”

“I don’t get jealous,” She said. “I do, however, get even.”

She watched Vance grin cheekily at her unspoken promise and went to town on the danish Gloria had gotten for her. "Gloria," She said. "Did you do Stein's assignment?"

Gloria nearly dropped her forkful of eggs and cried out, "There was an assignment?!"

Gloria also had a tendency to speak louder than necessary. Tegan smirked and watched the beginning of her friend's breakdown.

Just another morning, like any other. And that's how it would stay.

chapter two

Tegan walked across the quad towards the chapel, sandwiched between Evangeline and Gloria. In the warm autumn afternoon she’d taken off her blazer and tossed it over her arm. She listened half-heartedly to Gloria’s chatter that had seemed almost nonstop since they returned to school.

When she mentioned it, Gloria smirked and said, “You know how much news there is at the beginning of a new year.” She inhaled deeply and laughed. “I can smell the gossip.”

Tegan snickered, but Evangeline pulled her long hair into a sloppy bun on top of her head and sighed dramatically. “I don’t know why Cox moved the assembly to this afternoon,” She said. “Now I’ll be too awake to fall asleep.”

“At least we’re not going to freeze to death in that ice box,” Tegan said, looking up at the sun that had risen much later because of the change in season.

Evangeline was just about to remark when a soccer ball whizzed past her nose. She jumped back and let out a squeal of surprise.

Tegan covered her mouth so her friend wouldn’t see how hard she was trying to hold in her laughter. She looked around for the culprit and saw Gale Whittaker jogging towards them with a dimpled grin.

He loomed over them—at least a foot and a half taller than Tegan’s five-foot-four—and placed his hands on his hips. “Sorry, girls,” He said; although he looked anything but sorry. “I was playing a little one-on-one with Vance.”

Evangeline glared. “Whit, I swear, some day you’re going to kill somebody, and it’s probably going to be me!”

Whit laughed—a big booming sound that shook his whole body. Gale Whittaker was every Easton girl’s dream. He was tall, chiseled, came from a good family, and unlike his meathead brother, was actually quite interesting. Upon coming to Easton he inherited his older brother’s nickname with pride, but he wore it ten times better than Walt ever could.

“Shame I haven’t yet,” He said, tossing a wink Tegan’s way.

She giggled and ignored Evangeline’s pointed look because it was a universally known fact that Whit loved when a girl giggled. The moment was lost, however, when Vance approached, wearing a less than pleased expression.

“Whit,” He said, completely disregarding the girls, “I don’t have all day.”

Tegan nearly sneered. “No, you must have much more important things to do.”

“Like Lindsay King, perhaps?” Evangeline offered.

Gloria chortled into her hand, Tegan pressed her lips together hard, and even Whit let out a snicker. But all three quickly composed themselves when Vance raised a displeased eyebrow.

“We’re going to be late to the welcome,” He said in a dry tone. Turning on his heel, he stalked towards the dining hall.

Evangeline made a face at Tegan and nodded in Vance’s direction. Tegan frowned because she had no idea what Evangeline was trying to say. The two exchanged a series of purposeful looks until Tegan finally understood.

Evangeline rolled her eyes and said, “Gloria, I want a seat in the back, and if we don’t get there early they’ll be taken by those who don’t know any better. Oh,” she looked at Gale, “care to escort us, Whit?”

Whit grinned and slung his arms around their shoulders. “Let’s go, ladies.” He tossed a final wink towards Tegan and moved towards the chapel, Gloria already delving into a new story.

Tegan looked across the quad and spotted Vance leaning against a pillar outside the dining hall. She strode towards him, determined to get rid of his piss-poor attitude. She scuffed her heel on the cement to announce her presence, and he raised one eyebrow as usual.

“What can I possibly do for you?” Vance asked with a wink. “I’m out of PCP for the month.”

“Hilarious and charming,” Tegan commented. “Those qualities along with your unlimited supply of pharmaceuticals will get you far in life.”

“Your over-thought comeback deserves no recognition,” He said, a smirk making its way onto his face. “We both know you’re pissed—no need to be snippy. So, on a scale of one to ten, how upset with me are you?”

“Who the hell is Lindsay King?” Tegan blurted; though she found she didn’t regret it.

Vance looked down at his Nikes, attempting to hide a shit-eating grin. “Tey, she’s not a real person.”

Tegan opened her mouth but quickly shut it. “Wha—what?”

He looked up at her and laughed. “She’s not real. There is no Lindsay King at Easton—that I know, anyway. I made her up, told Charlie about her because I knew he would tell, and Charlie told Gloria.”

“Why?”

“Unless you want to come out of the closet with me this semester, I was helping out both of us,” Vance said bluntly. “If I’m hooking up with other girls, then we’re obviously not together. You would never stand for it.”

Tegan narrowed her eyes. “So you mean this slut’s not real?”

He pushed himself off the pillar and walked until they stood toe to toe. He looked down on her; even when she was in heels, she was only up to his nose. “Are you implying you have the hots for me?”

Tegan smirked. “I’ve always had the hots for you,” She said before she grabbed his face and kissed him, long and hard.
