    Stalker

Shay's life was perfect: two best friends, a supportive mother, quaint little hometown; until she learns of a secret admirer and his unhealthy devotion to her.
Shay soon realizes what he is willing to do anything it takes to win her affections.
    Anything.

    * * *
Sorry for the lack of a good summary.
So yeah, yet another story that will probably never make it past chapter two. Hopefully this one will though because I actually have a story line planned for it mostly and it's pretty darn good if I do say so myself x)
Still, I suck at continuing things so a little encouragement would be nice Smile
Anyway chapter one will be up shortly.
    Thanks!

    One

“Oh, God.” Shay sighed in an undertone to her best friend, Kate. “It’s only the second week of school and someone’s already trying to steal something from my locker.” Without warning she quickened her pace, practically jogging to her locker and the tall, dark-haired boy standing next to it, and Kate hastened to keep up.
“I’ll see you in fifth period.” Shay mouthed to Kate, waving her away as she turned to face the mysterious stranger leaning against her locker.
“Look, whatever you took just give it back.” Shay sighed, narrowing her eyes. To her surprise, he laughed.
“I can assure you, I’ve taken nothing.” He held out his hands to prove that they were empty. “I can turn out my pockets too if you want.” He said, smirking, and Shay blushed.
“I’m sorry. It’s just-” Frowning, she saw a single red rose taped to her locker. “Wait, you’re my secret admirer?”
“Caught me.” He said unblushingly. “Are you disappointed?”
She looked at him carefully for the first time and realized that she wasn’t, not at all. With jet black hair and piercing blue eyes he wasn’t short in the looks department and it looked like he visited the gym frequently. He slouched against the wall, hooking his backpack over one defined shoulder, and gazed at her as she thought.
“Definitely not.” She blurted, turning bright red.
“Good.” He said, grinning, and Shay realized that she didn’t even know her admirer’s name.
“I’m Shay by the way.” She smiled at the rhyme.
“I know. Well I should be going. Bye…Shay...”
“Wait!” Shay called to his turned back. “What’s your-?” But the card on the rose caught her eye and she trailed off.
    Dear Shay-
A rose for the girl from my dreams.
    -Slade.

    Two

“Who was that?” Kate asked the moment Shay slid, breathless, into her seat at the beginning of their fifth period class, English 12 GT.
“Hmm?” Shay rummaged distractedly through her bag, pretending to look for something, but Kate knew she was avoiding the question.
“The gorgeous boy by your locker?” Kate pressed. “The thief?”
Shay sighed, a curtain of blonde hair shielding her face from view as she continued to search, fruitlessly, for something she didn’t need.
“Turns out he wasn’t trying to filch anything from my locker after all.” She said, finally putting her bag down and sitting up, having decided that she was going to have to answer Kate’s questions sooner or later.
“In fact, he’s my secret admirer.” Shay continued offhandedly, as though discussing the weather. She grabbed the rose from her bag and set it gently on the desk as proof.
He is? Seriously?” Kate exclaimed, reaching over to read the rose’s card before Shay could snatch it away. Kate frowned as she read it and Shay found herself wishing she had remembered to take the card off and tuck it away somewhere private.
’The girl from my dreams’? He’s been dreaming about you?”
“I don’t think he means it literally.” Shay said lightly, though she had thought the same thing upon first reading it. She shrugged. “He’s probably just trying to be romantic.”
“Well he succeeded. Boxes of chocolate left in your locker, anonymous notes, roses. It’s the most romantic thing I’ve ever heard!” Kate gushed, eyes wide with jealousy. She glanced back down at the note. “Slade. A little unusual, but with looks like that…” She sighed, trailing off. “You’re going to say yes, right?”
    “To…?”
“Him, when he asks you out of course. Which he’s bound to do any day now.”
“Yeah, I suppose I will…” Shay said noncommittally.
“What do you mean-?” Kate began but Shay cut her off.
“Well it’s a bit creepy, isn’t it? Giving gifts to and obsessing over someone you’ve never even talked to before?”
Kate opened her mouth to reply but was interrupted by their teacher, Ms. Lane, who must’ve decided that she couldn’t ignore their discussion any longer as most of the class had abandoned the English lesson to listen in to it.
“Shay and Kate? Please pay attention.” She said, kindly but sternly, and everyone quickly listened. Ms. Lane was everyone’s favorite teacher, she was pretty and young, fair and patient, and Kate and Shay loved her.
“Sorry Ms. Lane.” They replied in unison.
“It’s okay, lets get back to the lesson.” Ms. Lane said as the class returned to studying the week’s vocabulary words.
Kate and Shay didn’t talk about Slade again, and neither of them noticed the curious pair of eyes watching from the window.

    Three

Slade was lolling against a wall as the final bell rang, waiting for Shay to make her regular appearance at her locker, as she did everyday before leaving school. Sure enough, she appeared within seconds, chatting animatedly with Kate as they left sixth period. He was pretty sure she had gym that period, not having a copy of her schedule at hand to check, and his suspicions were confirmed by the high color on her cheeks. She looked adorably tired- they were now playing volleyball and Slade knew Shay was a competitive player- and her wavy blond hair was tucked into a messy bun.
He watched her walk over to her locker and couldn’t help but grin as she spun the dial- right, left, right again- and popped open her locker, gracefully placing her books inside. Kate hovered annoyingly close to her, all the while keeping up a constant flow of chatter, and Slade sighed in frustration. If he missed another chance to speak with Shay because of that girl…
Finally, Kate left to go to her own locker, which was, thankfully, far down the hallway. Swinging his backpack casually over a shoulder, Slade walked over confidently. Now was the perfect time to ask Shay on a date and he had to do it quickly, a gorgeous girl like her wouldn’t stay single for long.
Feeling his presence, Shay turned her big green eyes to Slade as he hovered nearby, tucking a piece of blond hair behind her ear.
“Hi, Slade.” She answered a bit dully, and Slade decided she must still be tired from gym.
“Hello Shay.” Slade grinned wolfishly and Shay could feel herself becoming more and more uneasy. “I was wondering if you’d like to go on a date with me.” He said briskly, running a hand through his hair and sounding as if he already knew she would say yes.
Shay looked down at her feet for a moment, thinking. Finally she looked up, having decided that she was being silly, there was no reason to be uncomfortable around Slade. He was very good-looking and obviously romantic, as Kate had said.
“Sure.” Slade knew she was only hiding her excitement as to not appear overeager, she was an amazing actor (as had been proved in her 2nd period, drama 3).
“Great. I’ll pick you up tonight at eight.” He turned to leave.
“Sounds great- wait,” Shay called, and Slade turned, smiling, to see what she wanted. “Don’t you need my address?”
“That’s quite alright,” Slade shook his head at her, as if he considered her question to be foolish. “I have it already.”
And with that he left, leaving Shay in a stunned silence.

    Four

Slade walked confidently to Shay’s house, whistling cheerfully as he passed through the small park he had played in as a kid. Where he first met her… He paused by the swing set, reveling in his thoughts, and was glad to be alone- few people visited the park in the winter, especially after sundown. He let his mind wander over the memories of lazy summer days playing at the park, lingering on the day when she came into his life. Slade frowned, wondering if it were possible that Shay didn’t remember that day- the most cherished day of his life- her actions certainly did suggest that she had no memory of him at all… He waved away the thought, sure that he had to be as important to her as she was to him. Unconsciously, he sat on a swing, allowing nostalgia to fill his senses.
As a kid, Slade had no friends. His parents owned the biggest advertising agency around and, being extremely wealthy, got him and his brother Shane the best tutors- making human contact with other children unnecessary (so his mother had told him). The only time the brothers got to play with people their age was in the summer. One summer, years ago, as he came to play at the park with Shane, Slade met the prettiest girl he had ever seen, with big green eyes and wavy blonde hair. Nervously, he sat on the swing beside hers and was surprised when she was the one who initiated conversation. That day the two of them played until dusk; they got along extremely well and she was the closest thing he had ever had to a friend. When it was time for her to go home- accompanied by her mother- he forgot to ask her name. That lapse of good judgment had cost Slade countless nights’ sleep, plagued as he was by dreams of the lovely stranger who was the only person he ever connected with. He began to search for her, the girl from the park, until-
Slade broke off the thought, deciding not to ruin the night by reliving the past, and got up. Continuing to whistle loudly, he cut through the nearby cemetery, slowing down a little to glance at two tombstones sitting side by side. He could just make out the names on them by the light of the moon, although he knew the inscriptions on both by heart.
Lily Tamblin Heart was carved onto one, while the one on the right bore the name Shane Tobias Hill. It was too dark for him to see the dates of death, but he knew they would both read August 31st, 2008. Slade Hill looked impassively at them, as though they were of no importance to him, and kept walking. Anyone watching might’ve noted that the sight of the graves seemed to give him an extra spring in his step as he continued on his way.

    Five

Shay clutched her queasy stomach gently, tempted to feign illness in order to stay home. She didn’t know why, it was totally irrational, but the thought of going out with Slade made her feel sick. There was something very disconcerting about his presence that made her want to stay far away.
“Honey? Are you ready? It’s almost eight!” Shay’s mother, Candace, called, walking into her daughter’s room. She practically bounced over to where Shay stood; Shay knew how excited her mother was that she was going on her first date.
“Err, did your closet throw up or something?” Candace asked, frowning slightly as she took in the windswept looking room; piles of clothes had been strewn across the floor and various necklaces were thrown haphazardly on a nearby lamp that looked likely to fall over and break at any minute.
Candace expected Shay to laugh or smile, but what she did not expect her daughter to do was burst into tears.
“I have nothing to wear!” Shay heard herself whine, tears streaming down her face. After searching through everything she owned multiple times, she came to the conclusion that she would just have to go on the date in her pajamas. This, combined with the fact that the mere thought of being alone with Slade made her want to throw up, had led to her minor break down.
“What’s wrong?” Candace rushed to hug her, looking alarmed. “Does this have to do with Slade?” She asked suspiciously, and Shay surrender-sighed, deciding to give her mother a small portion of the truth.
“Sort of.” She began twisting her fingers together in her lap, a nervous habit from when she was little.
“He hasn’t done anything bad to you has he?” Her mother asked, nostrils flaring. Shay gave a watery chuckle, Candace always jumped to conclusions.
“No, he’s been a perfect gentleman.” Shay admitted, wiping her streaming eyes with her thumbs.
    “Then, what?”
“He’s just very…unnerving.” Shay said slowly, surveying her mother’s reaction.
“You mean he makes you uncomfortable?” Candace frowned again, looking like she didn’t know what to say.
“Well, yes. I can’t really explain it..”
“Honey, you know dating someone is optional.” Candace said jokingly, smoothing Shay’s hair.
“I know. But he really likes me and I already promised I would go. I guess I should give him a chance...” Shay ran her fingers through her blonde waves, feeling a little better after talking it over with someone.
“Good.” Candace smiled and began skimming through the clothes.
“What are you-?” Shay began to ask, stopping as she watched her mother pull the perfect outfit from among the piles, as if by magic.
“Try this on.” Candace said, handing the clothes to Shay and smiling at her daughter as she walked out of the room.
Tugging on the short black skirt and the flowy, turquoise shirt her mother picked out for her, Shay couldn’t help but smile at her reflection as she stood in front of the mirror. The skirt showed off her legs- defined from years of softball and volleyball- and the turquoise looked pretty with her light hair and bright green eyes. The burst of confidence cleared her head a little and she decided that maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all. At exactly eight o’clock the doorbell rang and -grabbing a turquoise hair clip from her night stand and sliding it into place- Shay went to answer it.

“Hello, you must be Slade.” Candace said excitedly as she beat Shay to the front door.
“Yes ma’am, it’s a pleasure to meet you.” Slade grinned, his cheeks flushed from the cold.
“Ooh, cute and polite, sweetie you have excellent taste!” Candace exclaimed, turning towards Shay, who had just entered the room.
“You look beautiful.” Slade said, chuckling as he watched Shay and Candace exchange furtive looks in Shay’s desperate attempts to get her mother to leave the room.
“Oh,” Shay blushed, glancing down at her feet. She still wasn’t used to Slade’s many compliments. “thank you.”
“Fine, I’m leaving!“ Candace huffed suddenly, glaring at her daughter. “It was a pleasure to meet you Slade.“ She said sweetly before turning to leave the room, her cotton robe billowing behind her.
“She, err, has to go take her pills.” Shay said in response to Slade’s raised eyebrows. He laughed huskily.
“These are for you.” As if by magic he produced a bouquet of pink roses from behind his back and handed them to Shay.
“They’re beautiful, thank you.” She said, leaning down to sniff the roses. She could feel her face growing warm, well aware of Slade’s watchful eyes on her.
Slade couldn’t help but stare. Her glowing cheeks, long hair, the way she peaked up at him through her lashes as she bent to smell the flowers… He was tempted to reach out and touch her but he had to restrain himself. Not here. There would be plenty of time for all of that later, years of it.
“Are you ready?” He asked, stuffing his hands deep into his jacket pockets as he turned towards the front door. Best to avoid temptation.
    “Sure. Where are we going?”
“Where we first met.” And with that he swept from the house, leaving Shay, still holding the roses, baffled behind him.
We’re going to the high school? She wondered, bemused, before following him into the waiting darkness.

“Slade?” Shay gasped between chattering teeth as ice cold air filled her lungs. “W-what are we doing here? It’s freezing outside!” She clutched at her wool coat, drawing it closely around her. She wished she had had the insight to wear tights underneath her skirt.
Slade laughed and a puff of smoke appeared as his warm breathe hit the winter air. He had to restrain himself from jumping up and down in excitement. This was the moment he had been waiting for, for years. “Follow me.” He said leading her over to the swing set that marked the epicenter of the small park. “Come sit.” He gestured to one of the swings and Shay reluctantly obeyed, flinching as the cold metal touched her bare legs.
“What are we doing here?” She repeated. “I thought we were going to the high school?” She sounded unsure as she squinted into the darkness, trying to make out Slade’s expression.
“Why would we go there?” Slade asked impatiently.
“Well, err, you said we were going to the place we first met so I-I assumed… we first met at the school so…”
Slade could feel a pit sink into the bottom of his stomach. “Don’t you remember?” He whispered, unwilling to believe that she didn’t remember that day, remember him…
“Remember what?” Shay was beginning to feel frightened, now fully conscious of just how alone her and Slade were. Everyone else would surely be home on such a cold night.
“When we first met, here, in the park.”
“I’m sorry, I think you have me confused with someone else…” Shay said uncertainly, clutching the metal chains of the swing tightly.
“No. I don’t.” Slade’s calmness was at odds with Shay’s rising panic. “I know, I know you’re the girl.” His voice broke. “You have to be!”
“I think I should go.” Shay stood up slowly, backing away.
“You’re not going anywhere.” Slade snarled, moving towards her. “I’m not letting you get away, not again.”
Shay turned, panicked, and began running as fast as she could. She was in good shape and could’ve easily outrun him if her heel hadn’t gotten stuck in a muddy patch of grass. She braced herself for the fall, not noticing the large jagged rock that lay where her head would land. She felt like her head had been split apart as agony filled her senses, blood trickling into the grass. The last thing she heard was slow, heavy footsteps coming closer and a soft voice whispering, “It’ll be okay. We’re together now. Forever.”

    Eight

“Shay? Honey? Are you awake?” Slade murmured into Shay’s ear. She had been unconscious for the better part of an hour and he was starting to get worried.
“Mmmm?” Shay sat up suddenly, rubbing her head. She tried desperately to remember what had happened but her splitting headache made it hard to think of anything but the pain.
“No, no, no.” Slade said sternly, gently pushing her back down. “You can’t move, your stitches haven’t set yet.”
“Stitches?” Shay gasped, instinctively reaching for the back of her head again. Her fingers met a thick layer of gauze, slightly damp on top. When she pulled her hand back her fingers were red, as if by magic.
“Looks like it’s time to change your bandage. Hold still.” Slade instructed upon seeing this. He worked cheerfully, whistling as he cut strips of gauze from a nearby emergency kit, oblivious to Shay staring dumbfounded at her blood.
“That rock gave you one nasty cut.” Slade said, giving a low whistle, as he gently propped Shay up against a pillow and pealed off the old bandage. “I’ve already had to change your bandage three times!” He looked at her fondly then, as if excessive bleeding was one of the qualities he prized most in a mate.
“Where am I?” Shay whimpered, wincing as Slade’s nimble fingers grazed her now bare wound. She looked around the bright room for the first time and realized it was a bedroom. Whoever owns this place must be loaded, Shay thought. She couldn’t help but be awed by the lavish furnishings; in one corner of the room sat an armoire, dimpled cherubs carved painstakingly into the wood, an antique writing desk sat to her right, a big wing backed chair seated behind it, and Shay’s breathe caught in her throat when she saw it, a big old-fashioned typewriter sat on top of it.
“Maybe you could try it out.” Slade said knowingly, following her gaze. “When you feel better.” He added hastily as Shay moved to get out of bed.
Shay obeyed, laying back down, and admired the large oil paintings that adorned the walls, all in ornate frames. She wondered where the bed was and realized, stupidly, that she was laying on it. She turned away from Slade, who was now sitting in the wing chair, watching her, and stifled a yawn.
“Go to sleep.” He said immediately.
Shay listened. Sleep sounded awfully nice. It was weird though, wasn’t this all a dream already?

    Nine

When Shay woke up the shadows in the room were longer and Slade was nowhere in sight. She exhaled in relief and slumped back against the pillows, maybe it was all a dream after all. After her eyes adjusted to the darkness, however, she remembered her surroundings and moaned. What was Slade planning to do with her?
Suddenly she heard him. He was talking to someone in a low voice behind a closed door that Shay presumed opened to a hallway. The door opened suddenly and Shay jumped.
“You’re awake.” Slade said happily, snapping shut his cell phone with one hand. Shay nodded, still uncertain of the events that had led up to this moment.
    “What happened?”
Slade came and sat on the edge of the bed and Shay restrained herself from cringing away from him.
“Don’t you remember? You fell and hit your head.” He said shortly, as if that explained everything and there was no need for further questions.
“I gathered as much.” Shay touched the bandage covering the back of her head briefly. “Where are we now?”
Slade got off of the bed then and walked over to the window. He drew back the shades and looked out. He stayed like that for a long time and Shay wondered what he could possibly see in the pitch blackness of night.
    “Slade…? I said-”
“I heard you.” He ran his fingers through his dark shaggy hair, making it stand up in spikes. “Don’t worry about that now.”
“Look,” Shay said slowly, fear trickling into her mind. “thanks for patching me up. I don’t even know how you managed to give me stitches, how did…?” She quieted under Slade’s gaze and made a mental note to go to the hospital and get taken care of by a professional the moment Slade let her go. If Slade ever lets me go… She pushed the thought away quickly and sat up in the bed. “I should really go. My mother must be so worried about me.”
“You’re not leaving.” Slade said quietly and Shay could feel unformed tears pricking her eyes.
    “Please, I really need to-”
“I said no!” Slade roared and Shay began to shake, crying silently. She was afraid of making too much noise and further angering him.
“Don’t cry.” He said, hurrying over to her. He put his arm around her shoulders and Shay was too distressed and scared to stop him. “You’ll be really happy here with me.” He whispered. “I promise I’ll make you so happy.”
Shay raised her head to look at him, tears streaming down her beautiful face. She wiped them away with her thumbs and Slade reached over, tucking a stray curl behind her ear.
“You are so pretty.” He said, pleased that she was no longer shying away from his touch. He moved his head forward as Shay stared at him, eyes huge. Slowly he brought his lips to hers. Shay didn’t respond for a moment, shocked, but soon she was leaning forward, moving her lips with his. She had decided already that the only way to get Slade to let her leave was to play his games. He ran his tongue across her lips and Shay opened her mouth slightly, giving him access. She convinced herself that she was only playing along so that she could leave but, if she was honest with herself, this was the best kiss she had ever had. Slade pulled away suddenly and Shay was tempted to grab the back of his head and pull him to her again. Instead she leaned back, staring pointedly at the ceiling.
“I think you should get your rest.” Slade took the cue to leave, striding over to the door and closing it behind him. Shay watched him go regretfully, now that he was gone there was nothing to distract her from her thoughts.

    Ten

Later, as she lay in bed staring up at the ceiling, Shay heard a door open and close loudly and guessed it to be the front door. Her presumption was confirmed when a car started outside. She ran to the window and made it just in time to see headlights fading away. Had Slade really left her in a strange house alone? She tiptoed over to the door and opened it slowly. It led out into a hallway, just like she thought it would. To her right was a railing where the floor dropped off, giving her a good view of the room below. It was an entrance way, French double doors served as the front door and a huge oriental rug hid most of the marble floor. More oil paintings covered the walls here too, they all looked similar and Shay thought they must all be by the same artist. A huge crystal chandelier hung from the ceiling and dangled in the middle of the room.
Shay turned her attention to the hallway and could see more doors leading off of it. She peaked into one of the rooms and gasped. It appeared to be a bedroom, obviously Slade’s. The black walls were peppered with realistic looking paintings of her doing various things, drawing, reading, and, her stomach churned when she spotted it, even one of her in her bedroom sleeping. She could feel the hairs on the back of her neck stand up and she quickly backed out of the room, not wanting to see any more.
She continued down the long hallway and, after passing many more closed doors, the house really was big, finally came to the top of a winding staircase. Slowly she walked down the steps, clutching the banister as she listened for sounds of the car returning. She shivered as her bare feet touched the cool marble floor of the foyer and welcomed the cozy feel of the plush rug as she stepped across it. The room was even more impressive up close and Shay distractedly admired the intricate designs printed on the deep red wallpaper. She traced them with her fingertips as she walked.
A little farther and she was in the biggest kitchen she had ever seen. She imagined herself cooking huge meals in there, running to Slade as he got home from work, telling him dinner was ready…she shook the unwelcome image away and spotted a piece of paper on the island in the middle of the room. Tiptoeing over she realized it was meant for her. With trembling fingers she picked it up and read, noting Slade’s beautiful calligraphic handwriting.

    Dear Shay,
I don’t think you’ll wake up before I get back but if you do, don’t worry, I’ve only gone to get food for us. I know you’re nervous about our relationship but I’m going to prove to you that we are meant to be together. Forever. I’ll be home soon.

    All my love,
    Slade

Random words jumped off of the page at her. Nervous. Relationship. Love. Forever. It was all making her head spin. I’ll be home soon. But how soon was soon? He wouldn’t be gone for too long, he had to know she would try to escape, right? Had he been sure she would sleep through his absence or did he trust her enough now to leave her alone, to think she would stay with him? Either way he was wrong, she thought, looking around desperately for a phone. Suddenly she spotted his cell phone, left by the sink. Shay marveled at it for a second and couldn’t help but think that this was all too easy. She pushed that thought away and reached for the phone, automatically dialing 911.
“Hello, what’s your emergency?” A woman’s voice answered and Shay’s heart raced. “Hello? Hello?” The woman called anxiously, but Shay ignored her. She had just heard the unmistakable sounds of a car approaching.

    Eleven

“Shay? Honey, maybe you should go lay down. You look pale.” Slade said, surprised to see her standing in the kitchen eating an apple. He frowned. “What are you doing down here anyway?” He asked suspiciously.
“I got hungry.” Shay replied, trying to keep her voice from shaking.
“Oh.” Shay watched his eyes go from her to his cell phone, still on the counter where he’d left it. He relaxed a little. “Well I got groceries for us.” He said, unnecessarily holding up a plastic bag stuffed with food for her to see. Shay nodded as he began putting things away.
“Here let me help you.” She said, silently counting down the seconds. How long did the woman say it would take for police to come? It had to be any moment now, right? Her fingers trembled nervously as she reached for a bag, aware of Slade’s eyes on her.
“That’s okay, I’ve got it.” Slade was staring at her, looking concerned. “Go relax, really.”
Shay tugged on a blonde curl, unsure of what to do with herself. Suddenly she saw flashing red and blue lights appear through the thicket of trees that the kitchen window overlooked, bringing the sound of a siren with them. Slade’s back stiffened, but, after a moment, he continued putting various food items- bread, cereal, strawberries- in their proper places.
“Slade?” Shay’s voice was small, feeble, as she stared at him. What did someone do in this kind of situation? She didn’t feel as scared now that she knew help was on the way but, in the back of her mind, she couldn’t ignore the twinges of regret from her decision.
“Yes?” Slade’s reply was icy, his eyes on the window as he traced the path the lights took as the police car made its way up the long driveway.
Without thinking Shay grabbed him by the shirt, pulling him to her. He staggered forward, surprised, until he realized what she was trying to do. Regaining his composure, he leaned down and cupped her face in his hands. They stared into each others eyes for a moment, their faces inches apart, until Shay closed the gap between their lips and kissed him fiercely. They stayed like that as the police car crested over the hill that led up to the property so that it was in view of the house, as it rolled to a stop in the driveway. It was only when a loud knock on the door resounded throughout the kitchen that Shay pulled away. Slade looked from her to the door, eyes questioning. Shay bit her lip, glancing at him one last time. Before going to answer it.

    Twelve

The next couple of hours felt like a dream to Shay. She watched herself talking to the police officers at the door, feeling like she was watching a play, unsure of what to make of it.
“Hello.” She said, breathless, as she opened the door.
The police officers exchanged confused glances, she didn’t look like the manic-sounding girl who had called 911 only ten minutes before.
“You called 911, correct?” The shorter of the two asked.
    “Yes.”
“And the man you claimed-” The other one glanced down at a piece of paper he was carrying. “’kidnapped’ you is…?” They were looking skeptical now as they took in Shay’s calm exterior.
    “Right this way.”
The next couple of minutes were a blur. One moment Shay was talking to the police, the next they were making their way into the house, asking questions and, soon enough, Slade was sitting at the back of the police car, looking unsure of how he’d gotten there.
Soon she was being engulfed by her mother, who had driven up there after a call from Shay, despite the assurance from both of the police officers that they would bring her home as soon as they could.
“Are you okay? Did he hurt you?” Candace asked turning her daughter around and checking for bruises.
“I’m fine Mom.” Shay said quietly.
“I’m just so glad you were able to call 911.” Candace said, hugging Shay tightly. “What happened to you?” She gasped, feeling the gauze on the back of Shay’s head.
“I fell and hit my head on a rock.” Shay said tiredly. She had been dreading this part, having to explain everything that had happened to her in the past couple of days. And what she felt about it all… “Look, Mom-”
    “A rock? Oh my-”
“Mom! Can we just go home?” Shay asked, starting to tremble in the winter air. She could feel goose bumps on her arms and wondered if they were from the cold, or the knowledge that Slade’s eyes were on her, watching her every movement. Accusing.

AN: Sorry Slade and the cops don't get into some sort of epic fight. He's actually a pretty chill person. Once you get over the whole psychotic thing...

    Thirteen

    2 weeks later
Ohtavian Shores Institution for Troubled Teens (O.H.S.H.I.T.T.)
    Isolation Room
“So why do you think you had such a deep infatuation with this girl?”
“Her name is Shay and I already told you why.” Slade glared at his therapist. He was becoming more and more annoyed as their ‘session’ went on. “Look, Rick-”
“That’s Dr. Richard Marshall to you.” Dr. Richard Marshall said, managing to maintain his calm disposition no matter how hard Slade tried to provoke him.
Dr. Richard Marshall,” Slade spat venomously. “just let me go. There’s nothing wrong with me. I don’t belong here.”
“You tried to kidnap a young girl.” Dr. Marshall said pleasantly, taking a sip from his diet Coca-Cola can. He leaned forward, pushing his glasses further up the bridge of his nose with one finger. “Why did you do that?”
“For the last time,” Slade said, tightening his grip on his chair’s arms. It was one of the two lone pieces of furniture that occupied the isolation room, Dr. Marshall occupied another chair, a big, comfortable-looking wingback. Other pieces of furniture weren’t allowed in order to “preserve patient safety”. All of the patients and staff knew that translated into: we don’t trust you to stop yourself from doing something stupid with whatever we provide you with. On the bright side, there had only been two fatal accident’s in the institution’s history thanks to this rule, both involving folding chairs. Go figure. Slade thought about this as he watched his therapist slurp annoyingly at his drink. “I did not kidnap her. She loves me. She wanted to go.”
“Then why did she call 911?” Dr. Marshall smirked, sure that this logic was full proof. Slade leered back, he had his answer ready.
“Obviously her family pressured her into leaving me. They don’t want us to be together.” Slade sneered, angry at everyone for keeping him and Shay apart.
“Is this about what happened to your brother Shane and his girlfriend?” Dr. Marshall asked, tapping a pen against his chin thoughtfully.
“I- what?” Slade asked, surprised. Shane hadn’t been brought up in any of their sessions together before. His eyes narrowed. “What do you know about that?”
“For one thing,” Richard Marshall said slowly, as if measuring each word. “I know Shane’s girlfriend-” He looked down at the clipboard on his lap and Slade leaned forward, hoping to see what was on it. Richard smiled knowingly, tilting the clipboard up, out of Slade’s view. “Lily, looked a lot like Shay. I also know that you dated Lily before Shane did.” He continued, and Slade couldn’t help but feel a little impressed. The man obviously did his research. “Another thing I know is that both died mysteriously on the same night. Why don’t you tell me about that?” Dr. Richard tilted his head slightly and leaned forward. It was his listening pose, when he was about to have a big breakthrough with a patient.
Slade shrugged. “It was a tragedy. I don’t know any more about it then you do.” Dr. Richard blinked, clearly disappointed with this response. “But I’ll tell you something I do know,” Slade was talking slowly now, timing it. Three. Two. One. Richard slumped forward abruptly, clutching at his throat.
“You shouldn’t drink so much caffeine,” Slade smiled, pouring the rest of the contents of the soda can onto the floor. He prodded the therapist with his toe, checking to be sure. Once Slade was satisfied that Dr. Richard Marshall was sufficiently dead, he walked over to the door, stuffing the can into his jacket pocket as he went. He spared the dead therapist one last glance before taking a hold of the doorknob and flinging the door open. “It isn’t good for you.”

AN: What really happened to the therapist? Ponder that... Smile

    Fourteen

    “Hey, Shay!”
Shay sighed as a boy she’d never seen before jogged over to her. If she had to answer one more question about what really happened with Slade she would scream. It was hard enough listening to the snide comments spoken in undertones about her ‘sex life’ in the hallways. Soon the whispers rose to screams, no one seemed to care if she heard or not. Candace had told her not to worry, the rumors were just rumors, with no truth to them, after all, but Shay couldn’t help but sink a little more into herself every time she walked down the hall. She hunched her shoulders and kept her eyes on the floor, speed walking to her locker. The boy didn’t seem to get the hint.
“I’m Mason.” He said, smiling and extending a hand. Shay tried to keep herself from laughing, she couldn’t remember the last time someone had tried to shake her hand. Instead she ignored him, pointedly turning to her locker and spinning the dial with determination. Only one period stood between her and the weekend.
Shay expected Mason to lose his smile, walk away in a huff, angry at being snubbed. But he didn’t. He didn’t even let his hand drop when it became apparent that Shay wasn’t going to touch it. He frowned, rotating his hand slowly and examining it, as if wondering what was wrong with it. Shay couldn’t help it, she let out a small chuckle.
“What do you want?” She asked, quickly regaining composure.
“Hey, hey,” Mason said, putting his hands up as a white flag. “I just wanted to say hi.” Shay narrowed her eyes, if she had a dollar for every guy who ‘just wanted to say hi’ she could pay for the therapy sessions she was now required to go to, on top of weekly meetings with the school’s guidance counselor, Ms. Moreno.
“Well,” Shay said. She slammed her locker, smirking when the sudden movement caused Mason to flinch. “You said it. Goodbye.”
“Wait! There was something else I wanted to say!” Mason adjusted the strap on his shoulder bag, suddenly nervous.
“And? What is it?” Shay snapped. She hated herself for being such a bitch, Mason seemed nice enough and he was cute, anxiousness suited him, but she really wasn’t in the mood to deal with anyone besides Kate at the moment.
“I just, I just wanted to know if you wanted to go out… sometime… with me…” Mason mumbled, his voice getting quieter with each word.
“Could you speak up? I can’t understand you when you mutter like that.”
“I wanted to know if you would go out with me.” Mason looked up, finally meeting Shay’s eye.
Shay exhaled slowly, looking for the right words. “Look, Mason, you seem really nice but…”
“Oh, God.” Mason shook his head. “I can’t even imagine a worst sentence. Please,” He winced dramatically. “don’t finish it. I’m going to walk away now.” He looked genuinely hurt and Shay wondered what the real reason he had asked her out was, he didn’t seem like any of the other guys who had done it as a joke after news of the incident spread. She deliberated for a moment on whether to call out to him or not when she noticed that he was walking comically slow, clearly waiting for her to do that very thing. She giggled; if anything, he could make her laugh.
“Mason, wait.” She walked over to him. “Why did you really ask me out?”
Mason’s face broke into a small smile, he was slowly getting to her and he knew it. “Well, I just moved here, and-”
Shay held up a hand. “Wait. Pause, rewind. You just moved here?”
“Yeah, about a week ago-” Shay breathed in relief, so he hadn’t heard about Slade. Yet, anyway. “And I noticed you were in some of my classes and… Ithinkyouarereallybeautiful…” He finished in a rush.
“I would love to.” Shay murmured.
“What was that?” Mason teased. “I can’t understand you when you mutter.”
“I would love to go out with you.” Shay said loudly, causing everyone nearby to look up. Whispering started and Shay knew the news would spread like wildfire. But she didn’t care, for once everyone would be talking about something that made her happy.

AN: So I decided I might as well finish this, only a few chapters to go Smile Anyway, I honestly don't try to make Shay so up and down, it just comes off that way. Probably because I hate her hahah.
