chapter one.
People sometimes ask if we are siblings,
at which point we glance at the other awkwardly
and respond, no.
He has blonde hair and eyes the color of seaweed.
My hair is jet black and my eyes are tinted amber.
I don't know where people get that idea from.
Saturday is our eighth grade graduation dance.
It's themed something like Candyland.
Yesterday, Matt saundered into my bedroom
while my fingers sprang about the keyboard
typing up my next novel.
"Oh, hello. Ever heard of knocking?" I greeted.
He knocked his fingers against my head and grinned.
I smacked his hand away.
"What's up?" I asked
saving my document.
"So, apparently I'm a hot date for the dance.
I guess the whole boys prep school thing is a real turn-on.
"Don't remind me," I groaned.
In two weeks we would graduate eighth grade.
After ten weeks of summer,
Matt would move off to Holland.
Not the country, but the city
about an hour away that held
Dearton Preparatory School for Boys.
Twelve weeks that I was dreading with a clench in my stomach.
Every minute ticking by was a reminder.
As I was pondering, Matt ticked off the names of girls
that had asked him to the dance.
"Sandra, Alice, Kim, Rachel, Isabella,"
I held out my hand to stop him.
"What?" he questioned.
I took a deep breath.
"Well, I was wondering..."
Matt looked confused.
"I was thinking that we could go to the dance together. You know. Last one."
I rushed.
"Uh, if that's what you want..." Matt replied.
"All right."
I smiled. "Thanks."

(AN: It sucks, I know. I'm hoping it'll get better as the plot moves on.
And please tell me if the layout's annoying, I'm trying something different.)
