I ran as fast and as hard as I could, but I could hear the
pounding beat behind me as the hunters neared. I tried not to think about what
would happen to the little bundle in my arms if they caught me. I ran harder,
not caring anymore about the burning in my lungs, the stitch in my side, or the
searing pain in my legs, trying to outrun them, but it was no use, they were
going to catch me. But then, as I began to lose hope, a flicker of light
pierced through the blackness of fear, and I rushed toward it.
I sounded a piercing whistle, the loudest I’d ever done. A
few seconds later, I heard it: the flapping of wings. As the flying horse
reared its onyx head and shook its silver mane, I realized that it was a pony,
probably lost. It could not hold a grown person yet. But as I thought, the
hunters gained fast. I knew what I had to do. I placed the little baby girl on
the pony’s back and kissed her forehead. I had only seconds left. As the little
winged horse rose off the ground, I spoke. “Uisce, my beautiful girl, do not
forget me.”The little girl sniffed as if to say she wouldn’t. And
then my back erupted in pain as an arrow sliced into me. Then I was taken into
a warm, velvety darkness.
