I just found this out...
Okay, I know some people know this already, but all the spells in Harry Potter are Latin... Does anyone know what they mean?? Like, me and my friends were trying to figure out what expecto patronum(? I don't want to pick up the book and look through it) means... Does anyone speak Latin or know what they mean?? I just found this really cool...

Re: I just found this out...
ahah alottt of her names and spells have basis in mythology and stuff, too!
like remus lupin for example.
me and my friend mark were talkin bout it in english.
because we were going over mythology.
and the name "remus" comes from "remus and romulus" to 2 mythological brothers who founded rome.
they were raised by WOLVES!
and the word "lupine" means "doglike" or something.
so, i mean, if you break down his name, you could have totally figured out he was a werewolf from the getgo xD
but yeah you're right!
rowling doesnt just pull em out of nowhere
i never actually looked up the latin ones.
did you find any good ones?!
:]

Re: I just found this out...
Hahaha yes! When we were reading about Remus & Romulus in history it made it so much more entertaining (and easier to remember!) by thinking of Remus Lupin which no doubt led to endless Harry Potter daydreaming haha.
Hmmm, I've never actually looked up the Latin words but the spell names are usually easy enough to connect to what they actually do.
All I find for Expecto Patronum is "I shall unfold Patron", like Kelsie said!

And in Deathly Hallows, Remus's codename was Romulus,
which alludes to Roman mythology. ;]
But JKR is very educated in Latin, so she uses it quite often in the books.
Harry also means "power" I believe. I'm not quite sure.
But his name has some significance.
Voldemort, too. Alludes to "Voldemortis," which I forget the significance of.
Then spells like... "lumos" have obvious Latin roots.
Like think, "illuminate." So "lumos" or a variation of the word is probably the Latin word for light.

Re: I just found this out...
Haha omg jk rowling is so smart
If I were her, harry's name would be tom smith or something
Such as, "tom smith and the magical school" as a book title
Since I suck at coming up with names
Hahaha
I love how everything in hp has deeper meaning

Oh good!
Eww amber, what fanfics have you been reading? Hahaha
But I was just watching hp on tv
And a guy and a girl were making out
And harry walks by
And the guy goes, "get out of here"
And harry runs away
Hahaha I can't imagine them being sexually active x)
Except for sirirus, he's a boss

Re: I just found this out...
Haha because those fanfics are just revealing what JKR had to cut out when she remembered that she had a rather young audience!

Re: I just found this out...
Hahaha Harry's innocent eyes were violated!
Oh come off it, I don't read like those type of fanfics.
But most of the good ones have some type of kissing scenes.
Claire gives me a lot of the links so blame her xD
If JKR wrote for adults...she might extend the epilogue?

Re: I just found this out...
everytime i read a spell in hp,
i would wonder how in hell would she come up with these names
like "accio" i would wonder how that name could have been come up with.
