Chapter One
I walk from school, the crisp autumn air filling my nose with the scents of
pumpkins and crushed leaves. The wind blows my hair in every direction, and I
clutch my school books closer to my chest. My dance company jacket protects my
skin from becoming chilly, but it doesn’t protect me from the warm feeling I
get when Caleb came up to me, before putting his large hands over my eyes.
Suddenly, everything was so warm, and I tried to keep the darkness over me for
as long as I could. The feeling was exhilarating. I didn’t want it to end.
Caleb tried to hide his voice bringing it an octave higher than usual.
“Guess who?” His breath goes into my ear, and Caleb is so close to me, I can
smell his Old Spice cologne. I wasn’t one for perfumes or cologne, but now
that Caleb was starting to wear it, I didn’t mind. Plus, Old Spice wasn’t so
preppy, and it fit Caleb perfect. I shook my head, attempting to get his hands
off my face so that I could look into those emerald eyes of his. But, Caleb’s
hands didn’t move. What to do now? I thought to say his name, and then remove
his hands from my face.
“It’s Caleb.” I brought my hands up to his, placing them gently upon them, and
removed Caleb’s hands from my face. His stayed in mine for a few seconds
longer than they should have, before returning to their normal hiding place:
His pockets. My body spun, and I was facing Caleb now, my books still
clutched to my chest. He smiled at me, and I smiled back.
“Are we still on for tonight?” My voice seemed a little shaky, but Caleb never
noticed that anymore. My voice had always been breathy and soft, so it
normally became shaky every once and a while. His eyes sparkled, dancing in
the sunlight. It took me a while to actually think as I was staring intently
at the gems.
“Wouldn’t miss it!” Caleb gave me a huge hug, and ran off in the other
direction to his house on Henley Street. Still smiling, I walk over to Morris
Road, and go home.
