"Let's go for a walk."
Kyle and Adam look at me uncertainly.
I frown. "Unless you don't want to...?"
"It's dark out," Adam says, stating the obvious.
"The moon's not out; think about all the stars we'll be able to see," I counter easily. Adam is terrible at arguing, especially with me, but I think it's just because he has a soft spot for me.
So, as predicted, he relents. "Okay," He says with a shrug of his shoulders. "I'm game. Kyle?"
We both turn to look at my best friend, Adam's brother, for his consent. It isn't really needed, but we do things together; it's all or nothing.
Kyle glances towards the door and then back at me. "Let's go," He says, hopping to his feet.
Adam and I follow swiftly, and we all head out the door. We walk, three in a row, down the dimly lit road towards the lake, gawking at the nighttime sky.
We walk in silence, and Kyle starts humming a tune. I loop my arm through his, and we begin our goofy synchronized walk, laughing like small children.
Adam rolls his eyes, as if he's too mature for such childish games, but he still gives us a grin that's to die for. He laughs though, along with me, when Kyle releases my arm and begins to skip merrily down the road to the tune of The Wizard of Oz's "We're Off To See The Wizard".
Kyle's singing only grows louder, and Adam and I can't contain our hysterics. I watch, unable to breathe, as Adam sinks to his hands and knees from laughter. Neither of us can say a word, let alone stop laughing, so Kyle skips back towards us and waits.
After I help Adam to his feet, we continue towards the lake, arm in arm, as happy as the night would let us be.
We reach the shore, and I sink into a cross-legged sitting position, craning my neck to look up at the sky. Back home, the stars aren't as bright, but here, they're brilliant. They illuminate the night, shining down on the water, giving an eerie calm to everything.
At the campsites, there are fires flickering, people laughing and drinking and celebrating the beginning of summer. Kyle, Adam, and I are celebrating in our own way too.
I stand up, head still tilted towards the sky, and I spin. I twirl myself as fast as my feet will let me until I'm unable to stand. The night sky moves with me, the stars twinkling and swirling and blending together in a mass of beautiful white lights.
I collapse on the ground, and my head spins even though I've stopped. "Whoa," I say quietly, breaking the silence.
Adam and Kyle both look at me, but Kyle speaks up first. "What?"
"Spin," I say.
"What?" Kyle repeats.
"Spin," I say again. "Stand up, look at the sky, and spin."
He gives me a funny look but does what he was told. He spins and spins and spins, and pretty soon I expect him to collapse or throw up. But he does neither. He stops, looks at me, and grins.
I smile back. "Amazing, right?"
Adam, once again, looks at us as though we're crazy. I sit down next to him and bump his shoulder. "Sometimes it's okay to drop your ego, you know," I tease him. "You don't have to act cool in front of us."
Despite my jab, he smiles and ruffles my hair. "I know that, you freak."
Kyle sits down on my other side, so that I'm sandwiched in between the two boys. We stare up at the stars, and I lay my head against Adam's shoulder. The night air is warm, fitting around us like a blanket. We watch the sky until headlights hit us.
A state trooper hops down from the driver's seat of a Ford pick-up and tells us he's sorry but the park is closed at ten, and technically we're trespassing but he'll let it go because it's Memorial Weekend. He continues to say have fun and be careful before getting back into his truck and driving off.
Kyle, Adam, and I walk home hand in hand, our necks still craned up towards the sky.
